Everything Changes

Just as we got used to summer it's time to get back to school. Things are changing. Heraclitus claims that the only thing that doesn't change is change itself. How well have we adapted to change? Some people like to live in the memory of what was. Some like to live expectant of what will be. Others like things "just the way they are". It's not hard to identify these attitudes, just ask for a change and you'll know where people stand. Yet, we've all had to adapt to change. When I was young school started after "Labor Day", stores closed on Sunday, and if we misbehaved there was always a teacher with a big paddle waiting for us. Now it's hard to even imagine those things as a real or even possible today.

Everything changes! Whether change is good or bad mostly depends on our perspective. As I walked through the cloud forest in Costa Rica there was a giant tree that fell. It had been part of the forest canopy. Now there was light pouring through a natural skylight in the mostly shaded forest. It was breathtaking to see. Flowers and plants in that area were different than the surrounding vegetation. They were bright, fast growing, and lush. I was informed that every time a giant fell, seeds that had lain dormant for years were quickly sprouting from the sunlight. With time, another giant or two would rise and become part of the canopy. Death brought change and in that change was life.

The Gospel is in there. Can we see it, hear it? Jesus died that we may have life. Every time we share the love of God we bring light to the shadows. There are seeds that have been there for years just waiting to sprout forth in life. The only thing that may be in the way is the canopy. That canopy can be "power", "selfishness", "pride", or "stubbornness". We may not want to change. We may have gotten used to the shadows. We may think that this is the way things "ought" to be. Yet still we ask; why isn't this or that growing? All around us there is life waiting to bloom. Give those seeds a chance to shine in all their glory. Change will happen. It will come by death (natural) or by a willingness to die to self (humility) and pass on your place in the sun.

Matthew 4:16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.
Matthew 5:14-16 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

There are many more but regardless of how many scriptures there are we can't change or change things unless our heart is changed by and for God. How do you feel? Worried about what may change? Stuck on keeping things as they are? Excited about the future? Remember, whatever the future holds, He holds the future. I can't wait!
In Love through Christ;

Pastor Ed Garcia

Farewell

To God be the Glory
St. Paul wrote to the Colossians about our Lord Jesus Christ saying in Colossians 1:17-18,
He is before all things . In Him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

Andrae Crouch wrote in a song several years ago, "How can I say thanks for the things you have done for me? For the things so undeserved yet you did to prove your love for me...To God be the glory!"

Thank you for the way you have supported me and us over the last six months! It has been a hard and challenging road! Thanks and thanks for your prayers!

We of Emmanuel have grown in several ways over the past ten years ! Thanks be to God! We still have a way to go but thanks be to God, He is not finished with us yet! God will continue to guide Emmanuel so that it will make an even greater impact for the Kingdom of God in Austin!

Please continue to pray for us! We will continue to pray for you and for the Rev. Edward García who will come to pastor you.

I pray we will have the opportunity to say "Until later/Hasta luego" to most of you personally over the next three weeks. To God be the glory! May God bless you to be a blessing to someone else!

Your pastor and brother in Christ,

the Rev. Michael Dobbs B.

¡Gracias a Dios!

Michael Dobbs B.

The spring retreat will be April 16-18 at Twin Oaks in Buda. If your youth would like to attend, see Elizabeth Flores or Maurice Rodriguez for a registration form. The forms are due Sunday, April 3rd. Please make plans to attend. This is a great opportunity to meet other youth from our district and to fellowship with those we already know. Our next youth fundraiser will be in May for Cinco de Mayo. More details to come.

Sunday School News

We give thanks to God that our Sunday school attendance has been increasing over the last three months. In December, the average Sunday school attendance was 59, in January 72, and in February 73. As our Sunday school attendance has increased, so has our Sunday school offering. In December, the average offering for Sunday school was $39.14, and for February, it was $53.84. Praise the Lord!

We want to give special thanks and praise for now being able to offer a Sunday school class for young adults. The class, which began in January, is being taught by Leticia Estavillo and centers on the reading and discussing of the book, Godology. We thank Leticia, as well as all our other Sunday school teachers and substitute teachers, for allowing the Lord to use them as instruments for His work.

All study in Christian Education is for the purpose of learning and digesting the word and allowing it to transform and mold us in the image of Christ. Let us continue to encourage one another to come together on Sunday mornings to study God's word. Bring a friend!

Vacation Bible School 2010

Vacation Bible School or VBS has been tentatively scheduled for late June. The coordinators for this summer's Vacation Bible School are Anita Marquez and Cynthia Nieto. We give thanks to the Lord for their willingness to serve in this capacity.

The theme for VBS 2010 is Hero Headquarters: Where Kids Join Forces with God! At Hero Headquarters, kids will meet five unlikely Bible heroes who are often overlooked. They were not famous leaders or called by God to perform amazing miracles - yet their small acts were used by God to do wonderful things! Kids will discover that if they're willing to be used by God in any situation, no matter how big or small, they can make a difference. With God's power at work, they can be heroes right where they are!

Anita and Cynthia will soon begin recruiting volunteers for VBS. Please consider serving the Lord and Emmanuel United Methodist Church in this capacity. Details regarding VBS, including specific dates and times, will soon be forthcoming.
